The Project
Hanmer Springs Engineering engaged NZ MechTech to design, build and install the snow maker and ice walls for Glacial, New Zealand’s first fully functional snow room. Glacial is part of Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa’s new Elemental wellness experience, where guests move between hot and cold environments.
The Challenge
This was new territory for NZ MechTech. We had never designed or built a snow machine before, and nothing like it had been built in New Zealand. Space was also tight: all the tube work, instrumentation and equipment had to fit within the room layout and the roof space above it.
What We Did
We took the snow maker from concept design through to finished design, then fabricated and machined the snow maker, ice walls and tube work. We measured up on site and carried out the full installation. We worked alongside Neil Wilson of Hanmer Springs Engineering to bring Glacial to life.
The Result
New Zealand’s first fully functional snow room. Glacial gives visitors a genuine taste of alpine conditions in the middle of a thermal spa, and we’re proud of our team for taking on something completely new and making it work.
